Joey Alexander is a 12-year-old Jazz pianist prodigy. He was born Joey Alexander Sila in 2003 in Denpasar, Indonesia. At 6, he taught himself to play jazz. The family moved to New York, where Joey got his big break – he played at Wynton Marsalis’ Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 2014 gala and according to the New York Times became an “overnight sensation.” In May 2015, Joey released his first album My Favorite Things (he arranged all the songs) and became the first Indonesian musician to enter the Billboard 200 chart in the US.
Joey Alexander has been nominated for two 2016 Grammy Awards – one for Best Improvised Jazz Solo (Giant Steps) and one for Best Jazz Instrumental Album (My Favorite Things). Joey will be interviewed by Anderson Cooper on 60 Minutes on January 3 at 7:30pm on CBS. The 58th Annual Grammy Awards will be broadcast on February 15, 2016 (CBS).
