Why ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Set In New York, Not London?
Harry Potter novelist J.K. Rowling is the screenwriter behind Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The trailer for the film, which will be released in November 2016, has some Rowling fans up in arms. Yes, Rowling is writing about wizardry again but Fantastic Beasts is set in New York instead of London, home to all the Harry Potter books.

After watching the trailer, John Smith (who uses a British flag as his profile picture) wrote that he wasn’t sure he liked the new setting. “Why not London?” he wrote. Many were quick to defend Rowling’s choice including Michael Scanlon who wrote: “It’s fine if you don’t like the idea but it would be quite silly to judge the movie just because it’s based outside of London. I imagine JK Rowling wants people to see more of her world outside of what we have seen before.” Kent Harris makes a solid point: He believes Rowling set Fantastic Beats in New York to make it clear that Newt’s story has nothing to do with Harry’s story.
