Todd Winkler is the former US Air Force fighter pilot who was found guilty of murdering his third wife, Rachel Winkler. In 2012, Todd Winkler stabbed Rachel to death in their home with a pair of scissors. The prosecutors say that Winkler has killed before. On Sept. 26, 1999, Todd’s second wife, Catherine (nee Carlisle) Winkler, was killed in a car accident in the Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia.
Todd and Catherine were in the forest when, according to Todd Winkler, he suffered from a severe allergic reaction to a bug bite. CBS News reports, Catherine was “driving Todd to the hospital when she lost control of their truck and went off the side of a ravine.” Todd said he was “thrown clear of the vehicle as it plunged down a steep hill and burst into flames.” Winkler received more than $1 million from the insurance policy. 48 Hours will air its investigative report on Todd Winkler on December 12 at 10pm on CBS.
