The odd thing about Sinatra 100: An All-Star Grammy Concert was something you hardly think about. None of the songs were by Sinatra. That’s testimony to the power of Ol’ Blue Eyes’ artistry. As one famous musician after another stepped to the stage to steep themselves in Frank Sinatra’s big broad legacy, not a single one of them sang a word set to paper by Sinatra himself.
Yet the songs were undeniably Sinatra’s songs, even if they’d been written by Gershwin or Berlin or Sondheim. (Yes, you could persuasively argue that “Someone To Watch Over Me” and others belong as much to Ella Fitzgerald et al as to Francis Albert Sinatra.) Still the Sinatra stamp was pressed deeply into these American Songbook standards. Here’s a list of the artists who embodied Sinatra’s soul for this special night.
