Van Johnson is one of the stars of Black Ink Crew Chicago. He’s a tattoo artist at Ryan Henry’s 9Mag. Life hasn’t been easy for Ryan or Van. Ryan’s still coping with the loss of his 24-year-old sister Nova and 10-month-old niece Ava, who were both killed by Nova’s ex-boyfriend. Van was raised on the Southside of Chicago and ended up serving time in jail. He says his life changed when he became the father of Briyanah.

According to VH1, “though Van has a new lease on life, the mistakes of his past still haunt him, and he is currently facing time in jail.” He’s trying to keep his family together – he’s raising another younger daughter as his own (see photo below) – and wants to see 9Mag succeed. Black Ink Crew Chicago airs Mondays at 9pm on VH1.
