There’s a truism in NBA basketball that if you’re a really solid player, someone fundamentally sound with a good work ethic and a specialty (say the 3-ball) then you can make it in San Antonio. The Spurs are renowned for recognizing and spotlighting players whose skills suddenly look more formidable once they put on the Silver & Black. Former college superstar Jimmer Fredette has pinned his NBA hopes on that Spurs truism, entering the San Antonio camp after bumping around (Sacramento, Chicago, New Orleans) and failing to make a big NBA impact so far.
Fredette is a smart guy — another common denominator in Spurs success. He thinks he could be a Patty Mills-type for the Spurs. So this summer, Fredette did another very smart thing. He got invited to Chauncey Billups’ gym in Denver. Fredette told reporter Ananth Pandian that he “pounced on it of course. Just the opportunity to learn from one of the best was awesome.” In Spurs camp, Fredette will have that opportunity wherever he turns.
