Make Me a Millionaire Inventor host Deanne Bell travels to the University of Akron in Ohio to meet Dr. Yang Liu. Liu immigrated from China to the US seven years ago. He is now an assistant professor in the university’s department of biomedical engineering. He has invented a device called Smart Goggles, which has the potential to detect cancer, particularly skin cancer, during surgery.
The biomedical device allows a surgeon to see illuminated cancer cells on the surface of the skin. Dr. Liu’s business partner is Dr. Frank Papay — he was on the team that performed the first successful face transplant in the US. When a surgeon wears the Smart Goggles, they will be able to look at the cancerous tumors three-dimensionally, assuring that they get all of the tumor out, reducing the chance/need of doing additional surgeries in the future. Make Me A Millionaire Inventor airs Wednesdays at 10pm on CNBC.
