US Women’s Cup winning soccer player Lauren Holiday, 27, announced that she will retire from the women’s national team. Prior to making it as a professional soccer player, Holiday’s mother, Rita Cheney, remembers the day Lauren was cut from a regional team. Rita told Slate that Lauren “went into her bedroom, put a blanket over her head, and listened to Gloria Estefan’s ‘Reach Higher’ on loop.”
