Paul Dunne is putting the “open” in the British Open Championship. The 22-year-old amateur from Ireland is taking turns in the lead with guys whose names are slightly better known: Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson. Decked out in sharp-looking Under Armour gear, Dunne even looks a bit like Spieth. Or maybe it’s not the Under Armour — maybe it’s the composure.
If you hear some Americans accents shouting out Dunne’s name at St. Andrews, it’s because Dunne went to the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The UAB Blazers compete in Conference USA. Dunne’s caddie this week is actually his college coach at UAB, Alan Murray. The 32-year-old Murray is also from Ireland. Fellow Irishman and major champion Graeme McDowell also played at UAB in the early 2000s.
