Tracey Grissom fatally shot her ex-husband, Hunter Grissom, in broad daylight in a parking lot in Northport, Alabama, in May 2012. She called 911 after and said she “couldn’t take it anymore.” She said he started to physically abuse her in 2010. She said the abuse “got progressively worse” and included rape and sodomy. She said Hunter said that if she told anyone that he would kill her, and she believed him.
Tracey told the police that when she saw him that day in the parking lot, “he just stared at me mean and he flipped me off and I just go in there and shot him.” She shot him until the gun was empty (six shots). Hunter’s family believes Tracey “hunted him down,” that he died running for his life. Hunter’s family believes she had a motive – to collect a $103,000 insurance policy. It was revealed during her trial that Tracey called the life insurance company the day before she shot Hunter to verify that they had her correct address. Tracey was convicted of killing Hunter and received a 25-year prison sentence. 48 Hours looks at Grissom’s story on July 18 at 9pm on CBS.
