American golfer Kevin Chappell was tied for second place through 13 holes in the 2015 US Open at Chambers Bay. Chappell trailed a much more familiar name, Dustin Johnson by just a stroke at -3. Those early results had a not a few people asking: who is Kevin Chappell?
Excited to get the call that I am in the @usopengolf. Relieved the playoff in the dark didn’t cost me a chance to compete.

It’s not surprising that some people are surprised to see Chappell a stroke off the lead. The 28-year-old Chappell didn’t find out until June 14 that he would even be competing in the US Open. Chappell was “excited to get the call” and “relieved.” Chappell turned professional in 2008, earning his PGA Tour card in 2011 after finishing 9th on the Nationwide Tour money list. But big time golf fans know who Chappell is, and they’re less surprised to see his name there. Of the majors, the US Open is clearly Chappell’s favorite. The former UCLA star finished tied for fourth in the 2011 US Open, the year he got his card. Kevin Chappell is for real.
