The art world and Wall Street may be the two most famous sectors where men enjoy unaccountable favoritism over women, but the discrepancy in the restaurant world is even more striking. The always controversial World’s 50 Best Restaurants list was announced this week, with El Celler de Can Roca in Spain taking the top spot. Incredibly no restaurant run solo by a female chef was in the Top 50. In fact no restaurant run solo by a woman has ever made the list. (Top 50 Wall Street execs and artists lists always contain women.)
As a consolation prize, Chef Hélène Darroze won the Veuve Cliquot World’s Best Female Chef award. She did this without having either her Paris or London restaurant named to the Top 50. Darroze was made a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honour by French President Nicolas Sarkozy in 2012. But even she can’t crack the glass ceiling of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.
