NBA commissioner Adam Silver believes gambling on NBA games should be legal and controlled. After all, it clearly happens anyway. If Silver gets his wish, one of the most popular guys on the planet will be ex-con and former NBA ref Tim Donaghy. According to what Donaghy told New York magazine, getting basketball betting advice from him is basically like getting investment advice from Warren Buffett. Donaghy sees more than anyone else can about the game. He’s the ultimate insider.
Donaghy went to jail for betting on NBA games while reffing them. But he says he never “fixed” a game with his calls — because he never had to. Like other Vegas touts, Donaghy’s got a site to help you bet the games. It’s called Refpicks. He actually bases all his picks on who’s refereeing the games. He knows that refs try to balance things out, and he looks for when a balance is due. A blown call in one game can lead to a “make-up call” in a future contest. That’s enough of an edge, Donaghy says, to bet on. If you’re trying to decide whether following Donaghy’s advice is a good idea, maybe read his book to get to know him. It’s called: Personal Foul: A First-Person Account of the Scandal that Rocked the NBA.
