Francesco Molinari is the only player with a chance to win the US Open this weekend who attended the University of Turin. Guys out of Wake Forest (Webb Simpson) and University of Texas (Jordan Spieth) are more typical contenders, but Molinari is a special case. He’s a seasoned international competitor and the US Open course at Chambers Bay course seems to suit his strengths.
[Chambers Bay US Open — Embarass or Identify?]
Molinari was a member of the victorious 2010 and 2012 European Ryder Cup team and has been as high as No. 14 in the Official World Golf Ranking. Molinari finished a respectable tie for 23rd in last year’s US Open. He likes a difficult setup, especially a links style course by the sea like this year’s US Open at Chambers Bay. In links style majors Molinari has performed very well indeed, finishing tie for 15th and 9th at the last two British Opens. Molinari is tied for the 8th spot at -2 as play opens on Friday at Chambers Bay. Foreign players have won 8 out of the last 11 US Opens.
