LPGA pro Sophie Gustafson has been helping a teenage kid who became so depressed about his stutter that he tried to kill himself. The boy’s classmates and teammates on his soccer team (which he quit) were relentless in bullying him. At Golf Digest, Ron Sirak reveals that the boy’s mother told Gustafson that he was a big Tiger Woods fan. Tiger Woods responded in a beautiful, big-hearted way.
Turns out Tiger Woods was a stutterer too, who used to talk to his dog at night to try to fix it. Woods wrote a letter to the boy encouraging him to fight through his difficulties — and to realize that others, like Woods himself, had fought and won similar battles. The boy sent Woods’ note to Ron Sirak at Golf Digest. (The two links above go to Sirak’s two excellent stories about this at Golf Digest.)
Thanks so much @TigerWoods for sending my friend Dillon a letter. He got so happy! It’s being framed and hanged. #class
