The compelling 22-year-old American Sloane Stephens sent Venus Williams packing her big clay-covered kicks in the first round at Roland Garros. Stephens’ victory over the multiple major winner Williams was an upset, but it doesn’t seem that way now. Stephens next rolled over Heather Watson in the second round — 6-2, 6-4 in just over an hour — for her second consecutive straight-set victory at the 2015 French Open.
Stephens looks dynamic, comfortable, confident and unflappable in Paris. And she’s hitting an array of shots, including some exceptional drop shots displaying perfect control of her game. Currently ranked World No. 42, Stephens will face No. 49 Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria in the third round.
