Simple Minds is the Scottish band who topped America’s Billboard chart with their 1985 hit song “Don’t You (Forget About Me).” It was featured in John Hughes’ popular teenage angst and triumph film The Breakfast Club. Like the film, the song became an anthem for American teenagers of all ilks – the jock, the rebel, the prom queen, the outsider, the nerd. Simple Minds made another splash on the American side of the pond with their hit “Alive and Kicking.”
To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of “Don’t You,” Simple Minds will perform the song at the Billboard Music Awards (May 17). The lead singer Jim Kerr is one of the two remaining founding members (Charlie Burchill is the other). Simple Minds released their latest studio album Big Music in November 2014. The Guardian rated the album three stars out of five, commenting that “the band have managed to craft an album of pop that’s both true to their sound and interesting enough to give it a contemporary edge.”
