Sascha Bajin got back on the horse pretty fast. Dumped by longtime hitting partner Serena Williams back in March, Big Sascha — as Williams (and Twitter!) call him — quickly found a home with Williams’ rival Victoria Azarenka. Azarenka, a former World No. 1, took advantage of Sascha’s insider info and looked set to oust Serena Williams in the fourth round of the French Open. But then Williams did her thing, winning a difficult match 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Williams started slow, with Azarenka physically dominant — something that doesn’t happen to Williams often. But Williams gathered herself in the second set, hitting blistering backhands and pumping herself up between points. All the while Bajin watched from the good seats, talking nonstop to Azarenka’s coach Wim Fissette, sharing his intimate knowledge of Williams like a WikiLeaks operative. Azarenka looked exceptionally well-prepared for this match. But ultimately the champion in Williams emerged, simply wouldn’t be defeated. Big Sascha must be feeling good — it’s always nice when you perform well at the new job. Especially if you got canned from your last one. But that last job sure was a good one.
