Japanese airbag manufacturer Takata has acknowledged defects in a portion of its airbags. The U.S. government estimates that the Takata airbag recall will include 34 million vehicles. The Takata airbags can explode when triggered, and have been linked to six fatalities and numerous injuries, according to the New York Times.
Safecar.gov provides a Vehicle Identification lookup (VIN lookup) that allows consumers to check any recalls associated with their vehicles. There is also a Vehicle Safety Hotline available at 1-888-327-4236.
