Star Wars: Episode VII director J.J. Abrams told excited fans that one element he really loves about the new film is that “you can watch the movie and see what it is” even without CGI.
Star Wars fans, even in the 70s, have always been wowed by the special effects that created the stellar Star Wars world. But CGI is so prevalent now that some movies are guilty of an over-reliance on CGI technology and special effects–and the narrative suffers. Abrams wanted Star Wars: Episode VII to be different. Enter BB-8, a droid who will battle R2-D2 for the title of “most adorable droid in movie history,” according to Mark Hamill, who should know. BB-8 wowed the crowd by showing up at the big Star Wars event in Anaheim yesterday, proving it’s not a CGI invention.
