In Seinfeld they had rules against compassion and kindness. In The New Adventures of Old Christine, Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s character was inept, self-absorbed and thoughtless. But these two hit shows were child’s play compared to the exercise in misanthropy Louis-Dreyfus embodies now on HBO: President Selina Meyer of Veep is, as Louis-Dreyfus told Katie Couric, a “nasty ass person.”
Yet somehow it’s all funny. Maybe because there’s a sense that Louis-Dreyfus herself is largehearted–and that fact cuts her characters a break? It’s hard to know, but it’s not hard to see: Veep enters Season 4 this week and Julia Louis-Dreyfus has now had more legit hit shows than any other TV actress in history. Faced with the news that Kentucky Senator Rand Paul has developed a ridiculous campaign slogan for his IRL presidential run, Louis-Dreyfus responds in character with her own slogan–“Continuity with Change.” Then she adds elegantly, “Suck it, Rand Paul.”
