Tennis professional Daria Gavrilova beat Maria Sharapova at the Miami Open, 7-6 (7-4) 6-3. Sharapova said she knew little about the 21-year-old Russian-Australian player. It was Gavrilova’s first time beating a top-ten player. The 5’5″ Gavrilova, now ranked 97 in the world, will face Kurumi Nara next. In 2011, Gavrilova was a wildcard at the US Open, where she lost her first match against Nara. Nara is currently ranked 54 in the world.
Gavrilova is being coached by former professional tennis player and former Australian #1 Nicole Pratt.
