Google is developing a 3D mapping service, Project Tango, which will help retail shoppers search and navigate the aisles of stores to help them locate specific products. Gizmodo says, “It sort of turns shopping into a video game.” The mapping app can scan over a quarter million 3D measurements every second.
In a YouTube demonstration posted by Google’s partner aisle411, a woman walks into a Walgreens and affixes her Project Tango equipped tablet onto her shopping cart. It merges digital with reality. As she walks the aisles, she follows 3D augmentation to locate the products on her list and she even earns reward points along the way. As a Walgreens executive says in the video, “The store comes alive.”
