Gigi Butler paid her dues long before becoming CEO of Gigi’s Cupcakes. At 15, she started a cleaning company – not because she wanted to clean people’s houses but it was a way to “have something of my own.” She really wanted to become a singer. She sold her cleaning business and moved to Nashville. When not singing at bars, she worked as a waitress at Red Lobster.
Gigi was inspired to drop music for cupcakes when she got a call from her brother Steve in New York City. He called while waiting in line to buy a Red Velvet cupcake from a fancy cupcake shop. “These aren’t as good as yours,” he said. Gigi took out a $100,000 cash advance loan from a bank and opened the first Gigi’s Cupcakes shop, in Nashville. Today there are 94 Gigi’s Cupcakes locations across the US. She owes a lot of her success to the people who work for her. And she shows her appreciation to them when she goes on Undercover Boss. Some might think Gigi is a little too sweet, especially compared to the last subject of Undercover Boss, Armando Montelongo.
