The National Hockey League (NHL) and the NHL Players’ Association (NHLPA) have signed a deal with GoPro to use the GoPro action cams during live broadcasts. The makers of GoPro developed a wireless transmitter for the cameras which will be worn by players on the ice. The camera will make their NHL debut at this weekend’s skills competition before the All Star Game.
This just might be what the sport has needed to expand its TV audience. As one New York Islanders fan writes: “One of the reasons people don’t get hockey is because they ‘can’t watch the puck.’” GoPro says it’s excited to provide technology that can bring instant replays from a variety of wide angles but the NHL is not contractually obligated to use it. “Players can be resistant to such tech.”
