Curt Schilling was not elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame this week. Others too, like Mike Piazza, were denied the pleasure–presumably for baseball reasons. But Schilling doesn’t see it that way. He thinks there’s a conspiracy. Schilling thinks he got jilted because he’s a Republican. Because, you know, baseball hates Republicans. Just ask George W. Bush, former part-owner of the Texas Rangers. Or Nolan Ryan, or…hell, dig up Ty Cobb and ask him. Baseball is obviously a vast left wing conspiracy.
Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson and John Smoltz did get into the Hall of Fame–all in their first eligible year. Who knows what kind of politics Pedro has, but Smoltz, according to Schilling, is a Democrat. He told a radio interviewer on WEEI that besides being a Hall-of-Famer now, “[Smoltz] I think he’s a Democrat, and so… I know that as a Republican, that there’s some people who really don’t like that.” As Tom Ley at Deadspin points out, Smoltz isn’t even a Democrat–he’s a Romney backer.
