Like the wildly popular Serial podcast, West of Memphis, produced by Peter Jackson, dramatically follows a complicated and emotion-driven case to its raw conclusion. Three Memphis teens (aka the West Memphis 3) are convicted in 1994 of the murder of three young boys, but then everything that once seemed clear is cast into doubt.
The story was first brought to film as a three-film HBO documentary in the late 1990s called the Paradise Lost trilogy, but this comprehensive highly professional look at the case from 2012 is valuable and riveting. As one Netflix viewer writes: “If you like true crime thrillers, and if you’re like me and and never saw the HBO trilogy about the WM3, then I suspect you’ll enjoy this movie a lot.”
