Dave Thomas of Wendy’s fame didn’t create a lot of menu items that your doctor recommends. That Wendy’s triple-cheese burger is on nobody’s healthy hit list. But Dave did get one thing right for health-conscious people. Wendy’s was an early proponent of offering the delicious baked potato alternative to french fries. And you know what? Potatoes may have a bad reputation, but they’re actually good for you.
Potatoes are a great source of fiber, which almost every American could use more of. They’re also rich in vitamin C. And B6? Check. (B6 is valuable to your body for lots of reasons–and it’s perfect for potatoes because it aids in the healthy metabolizing of carbohydrates!) Loaded baked potatoes–not so great if you’re talking about loading with bacon and cheddar. But loading up a baked potato with olive oil and garlic, maybe a little fresh ground pepper? Do it! Baked potatoes are a terrific snack/side dish–especially as the weather gets colder. But despite Dave Thomas’ recommendation, do not pair with triple cheese burger.
