Bottles of Fireball Cinnamon Whisky are being pulled off the shelves in Europe as it was found that the 33 proof drink had too much propylene glycol in it. Propylene glycol is a chemical used in anti-freeze. The whisky’s tagline is “Tastes like heaven, burns like hell.”
The maker of the whisky, Sazerac, says its formula is “absolutely safe to drink” and pointed out that “most people consume propylene glycol every day in soft drinks, sweeteners, some foods and alcoholic beverages.” In the US, propylene glycol is “generally recognized as safe” by the FDA. The European recall occured after a batch of bottles meant to go to the States arrived in Europe by accident. The brand is not being recalled in North America.
