The company Snapchat said it will include ads in the “Recent Updates” section of the app in the United States. The ads won’t be in a user’s Snapchat feed–at least not yet. Users can choose if they want to watch the ads or not. “It goes away after you view it or within 24 hours, just like Stories,” the company wrote. (Stories are a collection of Snaps that can be viewed for 24 hours.) “We won’t put advertisements in your personal communications – things like Snaps or Chats. That would be totally rude.” Take that, Facebook, who tried to buy Snapchat for $3 billion in cash, but couldn’t. “We want to see if we can deliver an experience that’s fun and informative, the way ads used to be, before they got creepy and targeted,” the company wrote in a blog post.
Snapchat needs to generate real revenue as it was recently rumored to be raising financing at a $10 billion valuation.
