During a Monday Night Football broadcast announcer and former Super Bowl-winning coach Jon Gruden said: “I used to really like football.” Besides echoing how millions of Americans suddenly feel, what did Gruden mean? The comment came as the referees examined and then reversed the call on a Steelers’ touchdown. Announcing partner Mike Tirico questioned him about it, but moved quickly enough along.
Gruden probably meant that NFL football was a fast, furious sport without all the lame hanging around, looking at cameras and technology to see what happened. But if Jon Gruden doesn’t really like football anymore (and yet he’s being paid big bucks to analyze it), just imagine how his brother Jay Gruden feels. Jay Gruden is head coach of the Washington Redskins–a team that can’t be proud of its record (2-5), its owner, its defense, its offense, or even its team name.
