Google and a number of venture capital firms have invested $542 million in a startup called Magic Leap. The company is planning to “build a rocket ship for the mind.” Magic Leap’s Rony Abovitz says his technology will go “way beyond what virtual or augmented reality have so far been able to accomplish.” Abovitz co-founded the pioneering robotics company, MAKO Surgical Corp. which accepted a deal to merge with orthopedic implant company Stryker Medical for $1.65B in 2013.
There isn’t much information regarding Magic Leap other than a TEDx Sarasota talk that Abovitz gave in December 2012. Abovitz approached the stage microphone wearing a spaceman costume. The stage looked more like MTV Video Music Awards than TEDx, which might be a good thing.
