Alyssa Milano shared a selfie of her breastfeeding her newborn daughter, Elizabella Dylan. With the Instagram photo is a quote by Milan Kundera, author of The Unbearable Lightness of Being: “Ah, the joy of suckling! She lovingly watched the fishlike motions of the toothless mouth and she imagined that with her milk there flowed into her little son her deepest thoughts, concepts, and dreams.’ ~Milan Kundera.”
The quote is from Kundera’s less famous novel, Life is Elsewhere. The ‘she’ of that quote is the protagonist’s–Jamoril’s–mother who is “a monster of deceptive affections and leads the poor boy into believing that he has a prodigious imagination, that his greatness is undeniable.” That baby turns into an inadequate, soulless man. Not the quote we would have chosen.
