Unseeded professional tennis player Peng Shuai of China beat unseeded Belinda Bencic of Serbia at the US Open (6-2, 6-1). Peng will now face 10th seeded Caroline Wozniacki for a spot in the finals. Although the New York crowd has been rooting for Wozniacki, the borough of Queens – one of the most diverse places on Earth – is home to 49.6% of New York City’s Asian population, and the majority is Chinese. Flushing, Queens, where the US Open’s Arthur Ashe stadium is located, is the major commercial hub for Chinese American businesses. Will the community come out for Peng and her double-handed forehand? We’ll see.
Kevin Mitchell of The Guardian thinks Peng could go all the way. After creaming Bencic, he wrote of Peng: “She was ruthlessly efficient again and has reached the semi-finals… Who is to say she cannot ride that surge of form all the way to the final – and maybe win it?” Not Queens, that’s for sure.
