Derek Jeter–it’s emotional for New Yorkers. End of one helluva an era. Jeter is one of the good guys. Played the right way. Seemed to be playing not for the money but for the same reasons he played as a kid. Played every game the same way–all out. Saw the New York Yankees right through the steroid era–never a peep about Jeter and the juice. Championships, hustle, grace, fortitude. Jeter displayed all those qualities that make athletes into heroes, but that too many heroes don’t deliver on. Jeter did–and in a tough place to make it, too: New York City.
There’s a song about that, come to think of it. Sinatra sings it. But it’s not New York, New York that serenades Jeter through this elegant commercial tribute by Gatorade. It’s that other Sinatra gem that also rings true for the kid from Kalamazoo: My Way.
