Even if you’re not into golf or tennis, you probably heard PGA champion Rory McIlroy broke off his engagement this summer with Danish tennis player Caroline Wozniacki. Afterwards, McIlroy told a reporter that the breakup has helped his game. Well, it’s doing wonders for Wozniacki, too! She just beat five-time major champion Maria Sharapova at the US Open, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. (During the match, Sharapova argued with the chair umpire, which New Yorkers didn’t like.) Quickly, it seemed, Wozniacki won over over the crowd’s support.
She plans to keep it–and stick around New York as long as possible. Of course she’s determined to win her first Grand Slam title in the Big Apple. But first she needs to face Sara Errani, who beat Venus Williams and Mirjana Lucic-Baroni to get to the quarter-finals. Plus, there’s going to be a fancy fashion show in town after the US Open that Wozniacki wants to check out with her friend Serena Williams. Whether Wozniacki wins at the Arthur Ashe Stadium this year or not she’ll be back in NYC soon. She’s running the New York City Marathon on November 2.
