Kevin Love better not be a zero in Cleveland. But that’s how he’ll start out, wearing one. The Cavaliers acquisition of the coveted big man was made official today–and Love can now begin to zero in on his championship dreams. After all the hype about whether Lebron James would switch back to his original #23 jersey for his Cleveland return (he did), Love just took the easy way on the number decision. He’s a blank slate, tabula rasa, just at the beginning, all pure possibility–just look at his new number: 0.
It makes sense for lots of reasons. Maybe Love’s caught the tennis bug (the US Open does start in 48 hours). In tennis Love and Zero are already the same thing. A 6-0, 6-0 shellacking–in tennis it sounds so nice: Six-Love, Six-Love. In Minnesota Love wore a big bulky 42–and the NBA trend is to slim down this season. And zero is deceptive: it only looks like nothing, but when you stick it on the end of other numbers you get a lot more. Maybe Love is telling LeBron James and super guard Kyrie Irving, hey, I’m just here to add to you.
