Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson signed a $70 million five-year contract in late July to stay with the team. He is now the highest paid defensive back in the league. Peterson recently told Sports Illustrated that he hasn’t deposited the first check (for $15.3 million) yet, which brings to mind the time in the 1980s when MLB’s Rickey Henderson (aka “The Man of Steal”) framed a $1 million check instead of cashing it. Henderson was later convinced by the A’s accounting department to deposit the check.
Peterson wasn’t always Patrick Peterson, he used to go by Patrick Johnson. He changed his name when his mother married his biological father while he was in high school. In Arizona, Peterson could sign “John McCain” on the back of the check and the bank would say okay. He’s a helluva player.
