Last month Twitch leapt to international prominence with word that Google would buy the video game streaming business. People who don’t immediately think of video gaming as a spectator sport scratched their heads, wondering what made Twitch so attractive to Google. Some numbers jumped out at people. As 2paragraphs reported, “Twitch hosts more than 45 million visitors a month. But that’s not even the staggering number. The staggering number is the minutes–13 BILLION minutes a month.”
But after the initial rumors flew, there was no news that the Google-Twitch deal was consummated. This morning theinformation.com reported that Jeff Bezos and Amazon had swooped in and plucked all those gaming watchers from Google’s grasp. The site says Amazon “has been in late stage talks to acquire the video site.” Re/Code confirmed the deal was under way, putting the Twitch price at $1 billion.
