Jeff Gordon won his fifth Brickyard 400 race today. He couldn’t have done so without his crew chief Alan Gustafson. During lap 140, Gordon was in the lead with Kasey Kahne when they saw a caution flag as Martin Truex Jr. had car issues. Gordon yelled an expletive over the radio in tune with “Tell him to find the (blank) exit!”. When Truex was cleared, during lap 143, it was still Gordon and Kahne neck to neck. Gustafson reassured Gordon “The restart is going to be the race.” He was right.
Gustafson and Gordon started working together in 2010. One year later, Gordon won his 85th career Cup victory and improved to third all-time. Together they’ve scored seven wins in four years.
