In another major post-World Cup acquisition, Real Madrid announced that they have signed World Cup darling and Golden Boot winner James Rodriguez. The 23-year-old forward from Colombia turned heads around the world in this year’s tournament, scoring six goals in five games as his team made their way to the quarterfinals before being knocked out by host Brazil (Rodriguez had Colombia’s only goal in that game, too).
His reported transfer fee of 80 million Euros makes Rodriguez the fourth most expensive transfer of all time–just behind Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez, who earlier this month went to Real Madrid’s rival Barcelona for a fee of $128 million. Given that it was Colombia that ushered Uruguay towards to the exits this year in Brazil, we can expect some exciting encounters between the two players in Champions League play this year. (Let’s just hope no biting is involved.)
