Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighter Nick Diaz announced today that he’s coming out of retirement. He “retired” less than two years ago after testing positive for cannabis, twice. Diaz has been upfront about his use of medical marijuana — he can smoke legally in the state of California, where he lives. However, state athletic commissions prohibit it.
Diaz must have passed a series of drug tests in order to land his new three-fight contract. People in the UFC world are speculating that Diaz’s first opponent will be former middleweight champ Anderson “The Spider” Silver. It wouldn’t be the first time Silva has had to fight someone using a “performance-enhancing drug.” In 2010, he fought Chael Sonnen, who said he took something the night before the Silva fight – for a stomach bug. Just this week, Sonnen was issued a two-year suspension for five drug test failures.
