Rookie is a website for teenage girls who love to write and read the writing of other teenage girls. Everyone is invited to submit articles about anything and everything – photography, music, technology, and even fiction. Most of the prose is fast-paced, as you can imagine based on the speed at which most teenage girls speak. (The pop-up ad for Excedrin isn’t lost on visiting adults.)
Editor Tavi Gevinson (a fan of poetry, fashion and low-fi friend adventures, among other things) just graduated from high school. At eighteen, she’s already published two books: Rookie Yearbook One and Rookie Yearbook Two (now available via Drawn and Quarterly). The yearbooks include cute accessories like stickers, tarot cards and a cootie catcher, but they also include exclusive content from author Judy Blume and Lena Dunham of HBO’s Girls. Not to mention interviews with actresses Molly Ringwald and Emma Watson. Tavi is savvy. Word among Rookies is she’s going to take a gap-year before going to college.
