Ian Desmond, the 34-year-old MLB infielder and outfielder for the Colorado Rockies, is writing on social media about his “thoughts and experiences as a biracial man in America” and recalls a painful memory of his high school teammates who chanted “White Power!” before games.
Desmonds recalls (on slide 3): “we would say the Lord’s prayer and put out hands in the middle so all the white kids could yell it. Two Black kids on the whole team sitting in a stunned silence the white players didn’t seem to notice.”
When not in the field, Desi spends time with his wife of ten years, Chelsey, and their four children — with another on the way!
He concludes the slideshow by letting his fans know he’s not playing this year. “The COVID-19 pandemic has made this baseball season one that is a risk I am not comfortable taking” and “home is where I need to be right now.”
