When it comes to Taylor Swift, one of the rare pop superstars these days who gets credited for writing most of her own material, the questions abound about inspiration and process. Sure, some of it is gossip-based — fans wonder which jilted or jilting lover caused this song or that one to be born?
But the other curiosity is about how it gets done. Swift revealed today that she wrote her hit “Lover” on “piano in a quiet moment.” Presumably she was alone — that’s probably the “quiet.” She is listed as the lone songwriting credit on the single.
Swift performed it just as she wrote it, she says. And yes, even the live TV audience and the live studio audience didn’t make this emotional Saturday Night Live performance less than quiet. It really does seem like she’s finding the song just as she did once at the moment of its conception.
