Artists all over the world create portraits of celebrities, hoping a tweet or an instagram post will grab the celeb’s attention. The math goes something like this: the artist has 5K followers on social media, the movie star has 5 million followers. Hope springs eternal that the ego of the celeb will respond to the flattery and/or the art. A retweet or regram from the celeb will deliver recognition far beyond what the artist might otherwise hope for. It rarely works, but in the case of rapper/business mogul Ice Cube it just did.
Artist Lawrence M. White posted a portrait he is creating for a barbershop and tagged Ice Cube in his posts on Twitter and Instagram. The portrait’s subject? Ice Cube, of course. White has created an iconic image of the rapper who looks like the very definition of hip hop as he stares out from the wall. Ice Cube responded and shared the work-in-progress with his followers, saying “I love it.” He also told White to “post the finished work when you’re done.” That seems to mean Ice Cube will share it again once it’s finished.
It also means White hit the fame jackpot with his Ice Cube hip hop icon wall portrait. The math in this case goes like this: White as an impressive 35,000 followers on Instagram. Ice Cube? Ice Cube has 14,000,000 followers on Instagram. The Twitter ratio between the two is similar. You think White will post his finished Ice Cube barber shop portrait? Very very soon, you can bet.
I love it. Post the finish work when you’re done. https://t.co/G1GescucLb
