In the Star episode “Lean on Me,” for the funeral of her father Calvin (Ben Vereen), Carlotta (Queen Latifah) is visited by Cousin Duke (Glenn MaGee), Cousin Rashad (R&B singer MAJOR.), and her mother (Calvin’s ex-wife) Christine Brown, who is portrayed by the one and only Miss Patti LaBelle. It’s an emotional episode.
Exactly one week prior to the Star episode airing, it was announced that the 74-year-old two-time Grammy Award-winning R&B singer Patti LaBelle is launching a line of frozen Chinese food to be sold in supermarkets. You read that right.

The new frozen Chinese food business endeavor comes on the heels of LaBelle’s popular line of tasty pies sold at Walmart. For the frozen Chinese food line, LaBelle is partnering with New York restaurateur Stratis Morfogen. Morfogen, the former owner of Philippe, is the executive managing director of the newly opened Brooklyn Chop House, and managing member of JADE Satay Bars which are opening in Major League Baseball (MLB) stadiums this year. His forthcoming cookbook, Damn Good Dumplings, will be released in September 2019.
Expect to see more of LaBelle on TV. She’s also known for her roles on Greenleaf (Maxine Patterson), Daytime Divas (Gloria Tomas), American Horror Story (Dora Brown), and A Different World (Adele Wayne), among others. Fun fact: She made her big acting debut on the big screen with Denzel Washington in the Oscar nominated film A Soldier’s Story as Big Mary. Star airs Wednesdays at 9 pm on FOX, right after Empire.
