Nobody wants to get dunked on — and that includes in Space Jam movies, apparently. James Harden, Kawhi Leonard? No thanks, King. Yup, there’s a reason they created the word posterized, which means if you’re a defender futilely trying to defend a massive dunk then expect your abject futility forever immortalized on a poster. (These days the “poster” is an Instagram or YouTube video, but the idea remains.) It goes like this:
Word from NBA insiders including Brian Windhorst of ESPN is that the ultimate NBA superstar and entertainment executive LeBron James, despite giving Lola Bunny top billing, is having trouble getting other NBA stars to participate in his SpringHill Entertainment sequel to Space Jam. (The Michael Jordan Space Jam version featured a host of NBA superstars including Hall of Famers Charles Barkley, Larry Bird and Patrick Ewing.)
The whispers are that other NBA superstars don’t want to play second fiddle to James even in the movies, the sentiment being: You put me in the movie where you’re the star, I’m gonna be the one you’re dunking on. No thanks, is reportedly the reply. Why would Russell Westbrook or Kevin Durant to that? What about Steph Curry? Yeah, no. (Curry can produce his own damn jam if he wants.) But James will surely manage to find his superstars for Space Jam, even if recruiting them to the Lakers remains difficult. Fact is James has always been a team player first — and he’ll find a way.
