Beauty brand Olay is spending millions of dollars to air a 30-second TV commercial during Super Bowl LIII (February 3) to promote its skin care line. The Olay Super Bowl commercial is set on a dark and stormy night like a good horror movie. A couple is inside watching a movie on the couch when the electricity goes out — and someone breaks into the house.
The couple runs upstairs to the bedroom and the lock the door behind them. When the woman calls for help, she can’t unlock her phone because her face ID doesn’t recognize her. She realizes it’s because “I’ve been using Olay. It has totally transformed my skin.” Meanwhile, the masked intruder breaks down the down and plops himself on the bed only to tell the woman: “Your skin is glowing. You could be a movie star.”
The “movie star” woman is portrayed by actual movie star Sarah Michelle Geller, who’s known for her role as Helen Shivers in the 1997 cult classic I Know What You Did Last Summer and as Buffy Summers in the long-running TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, among others. Fun fact: That’s her real-life husband actor Freddie Prinze Jr. as the masked intruder.
