On the first night of The Voice Knockouts, coach Blake Shelton pits two Alabama natives against each other: 21-year-old Colton Smith against 22-year-old Kirk Jay. Both young men have faced adversity: Colton was not openly accepted by his community because he is gay. Kirk grew up extremely poor. But you wouldn’t know it when the two are on stage on The Voice. For the Knockout Round, Colton wears a Mexican mariachi suit with a bright red ribbon tie (red fingernails) and what appears to be a sheriff’s badge. Kirk rocks a blue-and-green plaid three-piece suit.
For their Blind Auditions, Kirk sang the Rascal Flatts song “Bless the Broken Road” — Colton sang Sia’s “Alive.” Lord knows what they’re singing for the Knockout. How Blake is going to decide between these two is a mystery. They’re so different! The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 pm on NBC.
